Building Your First Ambience Preset with Krotos Studio Pro
Krotos Studio comes with an extensive range of ambience presets for various scenarios. However, with Krotos Studio Pro you can also creating a custom ambience preset using your own library of sounds.
The Edit Mode, enables full customisation of any preset. You can load up the Ambience Template 01 preset from the library, which loads up an empty preset that is already programmed to work like any of our existing library presets, so all you need to do is drag sounds in to the engines.
Begin by selecting an ambient sound from your library—we've chosen a recording of cicadas from a Los Angeles.
Drag this file into Core Engine 1 within the Ambient Template. Krotos Studio's granular engines are used for ambiences, as they enable you to create evolving, natural sounds, without sounding looped or repeated.
Activate the sound by clicking the Start button, and use the XY pad to control the volum. If the sample you've chosen is quiet, hit the normalise button under the waveform viewer to bring the level up to 0dB - this will ensure consistency as you add more sounds in.
Once the audio file is in, you can rename the layer by right clicking. We rename Layer 1 as "Cicadas" in the tab and assign sections. This will help you quickly identify and control its parameters.
The second layer adds more details to your ambience preset. We've chosen a corridor room tone and Dragged it into the second tab Label this engine as we did with engine one.
Now you can blend between the two layers to create a dynamic soundscape. But, let's not stop there!
Now we'll bring in a long recording of an air conditioner and drag it into Tab 3. This adds subtle background noise, enhancing the realism of the ambience. As with the previous layers, rename it Air Conditioner for easy reference.
You can now blend all three layers using the XY pad, balancing their levels to create a cohesive soundscape.
For the final layer, we've chosen a more complex recording, featurin urban traffic and background sounds. Krotos Studio Pro ensures these recordings don't loop repetitively, continuing to generate a natural, evolving soundscape.
Once your ambience preset is complete, you can save it for future use. Use the Preset Export feature to bundle your settings into a reusable format.
For even greater flexibility, use Krotos Studio Pro’s multi-channel output to create stems in your DAW.
You can assign each layer to a separate output audio track, to record the sounds you've made into your timeline separately. This setup allows for precise adjustments during post-production, such as increasing traffic sounds or reducing cicadas.
